Maintenance and Repairs
We offer every service imaginable for both soft and hard (All Weather) tennis courts. The following is a brief description of those services.
I. Clay and Har-Tru (classified as soft courts) standard services
Annual opening also referred to as "spring conditioning". This includes clean up, old top dressing removed, rolling, new top dressing added, lines installed and net set up. In season maintenance is the weekly, bi-monthly or monthly, rolling and brushing your court requires for staying in optimal playing condition. End of season court closing; removal and putting away of lines, nets, rollers, hand tools and windscreens if applicable. Provide and install court covers to avoid wind erosion in the high wind areas.
Other related repair offerings are:
- Laser grading
- Irrigation repairs
- Net post replacement
- Overlays
- Total reconstruction
- Roller and other equipment repairs
- Fence repairs
For those individuals that would like to maintain their own courts, the following manuals provide recommendations for both Har-Tru and Hydro surfaces which are very helpful.
II. Sand filled turf surfaces such as "Sport Clay", "Grand Prix", and "Omni Court" type surfaces:
Annual recommended spring set up: court clean up, aggressive brushing of infill sands, application of additional sand and algaecide application. A second application of algaecide is recommended towards the end of the season.
III. Asphalt and Concrete (Classified as All Weather Courts) standard services.
The manufacturer of the surface material recommends "resurfacing" every 4-6 years depending on the amount of usage and exposure. Courts should be kept clean of sand, debris, moss and algae. If cracks appear, they should be kept sealed and level.
- Resurfacing (recoloring and texturing of the existing surface) and relining.
- Surface upgrades to "cushion systems".
- Surface pressure washing and cleaning
- Net post replacement
- Fence repairs
- Crack repair
- Reconstruction
*The "Achilles heel" of most aged asphalt tennis court is the development and maintenance of CRACKS.
The majority of cracking is a result of old asphalt which has lost its ability to "flex" and the pavement "shrinks" therefore "tearing" apart. Some cracking may occur prematurely, in pavements less than 12 years old if there are "weak" paving joints, sub standard asphalt mix and or application, unstable base and/or subbase materials.
Eventually all asphalt courts in New England, crack!
There are a multitude of crack repair materials and systems for various sizes and types of cracks, some lasting longer than others but even the best systems, such as the "Armor Crack Repair System" or "Riteway Crack Repair System" can only repair existing cracks. Once a court begins to develop structural cracks, there is a very good chance the existing cracks will grow in width and length and additional cracks will develop over time.
When the lineal footage of cracks exceeds 150'-200' per court, and or the area of the crack interferes with the game, it is time to consider reconstruction, i.e. removal of the pavement or pulverization of the pavement, replacing the net post, adding new pavement and color.
Overlays, the addition of new asphalt on top of old failed asphalt are not recommended and will result in new "failed" asphalt, the old cracks reflect through the new pavement within a year or two. "Sandwich Overlay Systems" where cracks are prefilled and a four to six inch gravel layer is placed over the old asphalt and a new three inch paving system is added on top of it, is a viable alternative in some circumstances.
